ID Parcel and Mail Solutions recently completed the installation of two new Packet Parcel Sorting Systems (PPSS) for SpeedX at their New York City and Chicago area locations. SpeedX is a tech-enabled last mile delivery provider for retailers and logistics providers that services 9,000+ zip codes across the US and Canada. They are top flight organization that achieves an impressive 95% on-time delivery for their customers. As a result, they needed an automated parcel sorting system partner to help them design and build systems that will help maintain their efficiency as they continue to grow.

Flexibility In Design

ID worked closely with SpeedX to design the systems to meet their specific requirements and provide significant value. The design provided induction, DWS, and sorting to 26 sorting outlets.

Increased Speed and Accuracy, and Reduced Labor and Equipment Costs

The new automated parcel sorting systems have allowed SpeedX to move from manual to automated sorting. After a successful installation and startup at their New York City site that included developing operating methods and confirming IT integration, the 2nd system was setup and installed at their new Chicago facility in just one week. Training was provided in the second week as SpeedX went live with the new system. Soon after, SpeedX was processing all their packages with ability to achieve even higher daily volumes. We expect an average increase of 7 to 8 times throughput per man hour compared to their previous manual processing.

The new equipment has also reduced their labor costs. And several features are included in these systems that will improve the accuracy and speed of data capture vs. manual processing. These including a Wipotec precision in-line weighing scale, Datalogic DM3610 dimensioning system for length, width, and height data, and a Datalogic AV-900 barcode reading system with integrated LED lighting system for 1D and 2D barcodes.

Both of SpeedX’s automated parcel sorting systems represent the newest version of ID’s PPSS that include the versatile Omnia multi directional wheel sorting tables. The Omnia sorting tables send parcels in any direction, 365 degrees and can achieve a range of manipulations to divert, sort, merge, align, rotate and singulate parcels. One of the most appealing benefits of the Omnia, is that it can sort at higher speeds at a lower price point. It’s also compact in size, easy to maintain, and is modular. ID Parcel & Mail Solutions designed these into its modular sorting conveyor units that allow the system to be easily expanded.

The PPSS can run at speeds of 4,400 pieces per hour with as few as 5 operators, depending on materials, supply of packages to feeding operators, and dimension of pieces. The system is capable of processing a wide range of parcel sizes from small mailing packets to medium cartons up to 22 lbs./10Kg in weight and from 5” x 5” X 0.25” to 24” x 17” x 18”.

Beyond Just Building Systems

As with any sophisticated machine, having a successful installation and startup are critical milestones, but not the end of the story. ID is providing SpeedX with service and support from both its local field service technicians and its headquarters. This includes telephone support for operational questions and guidance on easily resolved issues, regular preventive maintenance visits to ensure the systems continue to run smoothly as well as quickly responding when a repair is needed. With local service technicians in both the NY/NJ and Chicago regions, SpeedX can rely on ID and these new machines to provide the time sensitive sorting needed to deliver on their customer commitments.

The Flexibility of the Packet Parcel Sorting System

ID Parcel & Mail Solutions developed the Packet Parcel Sorting System line specifically for customers like SpeedX. It can be built to accommodate a wide range of throughput requirements due to its modular capabilities. SpeedX’s needs were relatively simple (DWS & sorting), and so we took care during the design process to include only the features that were necessary to accomplish their specific goals. And additional components can be added to the system as their needs change.

At ID Parcel and Mail Solutions we specialize in developing affordable systems for low to middle volume processing needs. Our PPSS works well for small operations looking to move from manual to automated parcel sorting, or for larger operations that require systems to supplement their existing set-ups.
